The questions were answered by Janne S. of Constantine
Hello K4M and everyone reading this!
Constantine is a band from Jyväskylä, Finland which plays melodic progressive metal with high and loud vocals.
- Why did you choose the name “Constantine”?
Hmm, I recall that there were many different options but “Constantine” sounded good and it linked us with history and mythology, which act as sources of inspiration in lyrics. Despite the popular belief, we didn’t name our band after the movie of the same name 😉
- Which bands are your sources of inspiration for Constantine?
I think all the music (especially good music!) we hear inspires us in some way, but I think that 80’s heavy metal bands and progressive metal bands have had the most impact in our musical style. Bands like Iron Maiden, Queensrÿche and Dream Theater to name a few.
The lyrics could be described as dark fantasy, but I draw inspiration from historical events, mythology, dreams and nightmares and the depths of the human mind. The songs on Divine Design tell stories about, for example, blind faith in post-apocalyptic earth, someone who is haunted by a nightmare which slowly consumes his/her life force or a girl who can see into the afterlife in her dreams and is persuaded by the dead to take her own life
- What is your favourite song from the album “Divine Design”?
I would have to say “Through The Veil Of Death”, since in my opinion it has all the elements that the band is all about – riffs, melodies, progressive and straightforward stuff and great vocals.
John Petrucci, hands down.
- What about the album distribution? Where can people buy your album?
A digital copy can be bought in all the major digital music stores (iTunes, Play.com etc.) but if you prefer the physical product, our label has its own store (87th Store: http://www.87thstore.fi/category/22/constantine) and they ship to Europe and North America. From 10th of December 2012 onwards it will also be available in Scandinavian stores, for example from CDON (http://cdon.eu/) which ships to a number of European countries. Unfortunately there are no retail stores in the UK that are selling our music at the moment.
- Have you any band/artist that you hate? J
Not really, although there are a great number of bands and artists whose art we can’t really understand 😉
- What was your first live experience? Do you remember how you felt once the show was over?
It was a “band marathon” event in Salo, Finland. I think it was in May 2007, so we had only played together for five or six months and it probably sounded just like that! We were late from our soundcheck and we basically just checked that everything worked and started playing right away…we’ve seen video footage of the gig and it wasn’t exactly a pleasure to watch! 😀 I remember that we felt mainly relieved after the show was over.
- Which countries have you already played?
We’ve played about 50 gigs in Finland so far and the following year will bring us also to UK/Europe for a small tour if things will go as planned.
We’re currently planning a UK/Europe tour for next year with our booking agency Real Media Music. We’re really looking forward to that, since our music owes so much to the 80’s British Heavy Metal and it’s an honour to get to play on the soil of our idols.
Thank you for your support in the past, present and future! Making music and especially touring would never be so fun if you weren’t there for us! We’re looking forward to see you guys on the road next year!
- Thank you for sharing your time with us. Best wishes from K4M.
Thanks for having us, it’s been a very enjoyable interview! All the best from Lassi, Janne S, Janne K, Antti and Marko of Constantine! \m/
